All you need to know about JNVST Exam
Admissions in JNVs are made through the JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA SELECTION TEST (JNVST) to Class VI. The medium of instruction in JNVs is the mother tongue or regional language up to Class VIII and thereafter English for Mathematics and Science and Hindi for Social Science. Students of the JNVs appear for board examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education. While education in the schools is free including board& lodging, uniform and textbooks, a sum of Rs. 600/- per month is collected only from the students of Classes IX to XII towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi. However, students belonging to SC/ST categories, Divyang students, all Girl students and the students whose family income is below poverty line (BPL) are exempted. In respect of wards of Government employees other than exempted category (Students of classes VI to VIII, all SC/ST & Girl students and wards of BPL families) Vikas Nidhi will be charged @Rs.1500/- per month or actual children education allowance received by the parent per month whichever is less. However, VVN shall not be less than Rs.600/- per student per month.
Who is eligible for JNVST 2025?
Residency and Schooling Requirements: Only bonafide residents of the district where the JNV is located are eligible. Candidates must reside and study Class V in the same district during 2024-25 in a Government/Government-recognized school. Proof of residency and schooling must be provided at admission.
Age Criteria: Candidates must be born between 01-05-2013 and 30-04-2015 (inclusive) ie 10 to 12 years of age. Birth certificates from the government authority are required at admission. In doubtful cases, age verification by a medical board is final.
Educational Requirements : Candidates must be studying in Class V for the entire academic session 2024-25. Admission to Class VI for the session 2024-25 requires passing Class V in 2022-23. Classes III, IV, and V must be completed in a Government/Government-aided/recognized school.
Eligibility for NIOS Candidates : Candidates with a ‘B’ certificate from NIOS obtained by 15th September 2024 are eligible if within the prescribed age group. Rural/Urban status for NIOS candidates is based on the parent’s residence.
Aadhaar Requirements: Aadhaar number or proof of Aadhaar enrollment is required. Candidates must provide Aadhaar details for authentication. Till Aadhaar is obtained, a residence certificate from the competent authority is needed.
Restrictions: Candidates who have passed Class V before 2024-25 or are repeaters are not eligible. Candidates cannot appear for the selection test more than once.

Rural and Urban Seats: 75% of seats in a district are reserved for candidates from rural areas. Remaining seats are open to both rural and urban candidates based on merit.
SC/ST Reservation: Seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) are reserved in proportion to their district population. Reservation will not be less than the national average (15% for SC, 7.5% for ST) and is capped at 50% combined. These reservations are over and above those selected under open merit.
OBC Reservation: 27% of seats are reserved for OBC students as per the central list. OBC candidates not in the central list will apply as General candidates.
Girls’ Reservation: At least one-third of total seats are reserved for girls. Preference may be given to girls over boys to meet this criterion.
Rural-Open Seats Allocation: Seats are allocated block-wise based on the rural population of the block.
Divyang (Differently Abled) Children Reservation: Reservations for orthopedically handicapped, hearing impaired, and visually handicapped as per GOI norms. Blindness: Total sight absence, visual acuity not exceeding 6/60 or 20/200, or limited vision field of 20 degrees. Hearing Impairment: Loss of 60 decibels or more in the better ear. Locomotor Disability: Significant movement restriction in limbs or cerebral palsy. Disability: At least 40% of any disability certified by a medical authority.

The selection test will be of two-hour duration from 11:30 am to 01:30 pm and will have 3 sections with only objective type questions. There are 80 questions in all for 100 marks. A single test booklet comprising of all the three sections will be given to each candidate. Additional time of 40 minutes will be allowed for “Divyang students” (differently-abled students).
